Millennial Man, issue 1: Injustice On The Operating Table!

Here it is, Melon Heads— the debut issue of Millennial Man!

Millennial Man has been one of those ideas that rattles around in my head for a couple of years now, so it feels really good to see him come to life on the page!

I’m really happy with how it came out and overall I think this is one of my best comics to date, but I have to admit that I got a bit frustrated by the coloring process. Coloring is my weakest suit as an illustrator, but that’s why it’s important to keep working on it.

I’ve been playing with a few different coloring media lately. I love using watercolors, but they can be tough to work with on bristol board and I don’t like to use micron pens on watercolor paper, so it’s a tough balancing act.

I used markers on this issue of Millennial Man— some fancy copic studio markers and some regular quality sketch markers.

Working with grey tone markers is still new to me, too. I really like the results I’m getting but I must need to go further with because they seem to disappear once I add color.

I’ll be playing with all sorts of different coloring techniques for the next week. I need to add some color to my illustrated headshot, and I’ve got a big splashy character page for Millenial Man, and 2 more episodes of Barry’s World waiting for some color to bring them to life. Hit me up at @realbarrymelon on Instagram or Twitter if you struggle with color too, and especially if you’ve got any secret tips that’ll make it easier!
