I only got to 4 on my latest #illustrationaday challenge, but that's ok

The goal of the #illustrationaday challenge is to push how many consecutive days I can draw an illustration every day.

My personal record is 30. That was an awesome month. I drew tons of great comics as a result of that run, and I learned a lot too.

Now, I’m trying to shift gears off of canvas and back into comics, so I decided to revisit the challenge.

This time, I decided to use ProCreate on my iPad to make all of my illustrations in order to force myself to broaden my skillset a bit.

The first step for each comic was to use a SeqArt comic panel template in ProCreate to create a layout.

Then, I draw over the image or find some other way to convert it into a comic.

I set the parameters of the challenge that I would succeed by advancing one comic through any phase of production that could be as granular as inking or coloring a single panel, after the comic is laid out in photos. I figured I might write some captions and count that as a day too. Staying really broad— the goal is just to sit down with an objective pertaining to creating comics every day and complete it. Err on the side of a success experience.

I got to 4 days. I was hoping for double digits, but it’s probably been a year since I finished one comic, and now I’ve started a couple new ones that might have legs.

So now we’re working on building momentum. 5 is beatable.

But also, I’m quietly challenging myself to publish as many blogs as possible and push them as far as possible. If that challenge goes well, I’ll give you an update.

For now, enjoy the fruits of my labor from my latest #illustrationaday challenge:

Day 1: Over The Top

Stitched together from photos taken at Silicon 2022.

Day 2: The Stoner Saga 4.1

This is the next step in the Stoner Saga. Coincidentally, parts 1 through 3 will be available for purchase soon on this very website.

Day 3: Over The Top, version 2.1

This is the first stab at penciling out the piece. From here, I’ll add more detail and make the story come to life. But now we’ve got a little meat on the bones of the idea.

Day 4: No Children, page 1.

This is an illustration I’ve had in my sketchbook for awhile, but I finally pulled it out and got it scanned. Unfortunately, the scan sucks. So I’m going to have to re-do it a bit, but it still counts as a successful day of #illustrationaday because I got it done, dammit.

So right here is where I ran out of steam. Might have gotten distracted by work, might have gotten caught up in a canvas. Idunno. But the streak is broken.

We’ll try to get that #illustrationaday streak going again soon, but for now I’ve got a new goal:

How many blogs can I publish in 30 days?
